Department of Management Information Systems Graduation Requirements for Master Students Enrolled after 2024

I.   Years of Enrollment:
1.  Minimum years of enrollment: 1  year
2.  Maximum years of enrollment: 4 years
(excluding 2 years of suspension)		Part-time students may prolong years of enrollment for 1 more year.
II. Minimum credits for graduation:  36  credits
(physical education and citizen national defense education are not included), including:
1.  Courses:
     minimum of required credits: 6 
     minimum of elective credits: 24 
2.  Master Thesis: 6  credits		Students are considered to have passed both academic and conduct assessment with the grade of 70 or above. Students who fail in conduct will be dismissed. The average of academic grades comprises 50 % of the overall graduation grades.
*Only English-taught courses will be recognized as graduation credits.

 III. Transfer credits: maximum          creditsAccording to NCHU regulation for credits exemption,  students should apply for credits exemption prior to the deadline of course add/drop.
Credit transfer applications are limited to courses offered by the department’s master’s program (including daytime credit programs and courses audited in the daytime master’s program).
 IV. Undergraduate credits from discipline-related courses may be counted as graduation credits: 3 credits.
(Limited to third- and fourth-year undergraduate courses in this department)		According to NCHU regulation, the number of credits students should take is determined by their advisor or the department chairperson. Students who need to take undergraduate  courses for research purposes, besides the credits for graduation, may take undergraduate courses with the consent of the instructor. The course may be counted as graduation credits after obtaining the approval form the advisor, and relevant department committee. Nevertheless, the maximum for such undergraduate credits: 3  credits. If graduate students take combined courses for fourth-year undergraduates and graduates, the maximum counted credits: 12  credits.
 V. Credits from other departments: 6  credits.Approval of credits from other departments (including inter-university course credits) requires the consent of the advisor.

  1. Students who fail the core courses should retake core courses.
  2. Students who don’t complete core courses cannot graduate.
  3. The course “Thesis Seminar and Practice” is offered every semester and is graded as “Pass” or “Fail.” Students must take and pass it twice.
  4. Items 1 to 4 are mandatory core courses within the department.
  5. Students must take at least one course from items 5 to 7. Additional courses taken within the department will be counted as elective credits for the department, while additional courses taken from equivalent courses in the College of Management will be considered credits from outside the department, subject to the restriction of Article 5: “Credits from other departments/programs: a maximum of 6 credits.”
  6. Courses from items 5 to 7 may also be substituted with equivalent courses offered by the College of Management; however, only one may be counted toward graduation credits.
  VII. Prerequisite Courses (not included in graduation credits): 9     credits

3. Data Structure                 3 credits		According to NCHU graduate regulation, students should take certain prerequisite courses at the undergraduate level, which are decided by advisors and chairperson. Prerequisite credits will not be counted as graduation credits. Students are not eligible to attend the thesis defense until they complete the prerequisite courses. The supplementary courses provide essential knowledge for students’ future. If students have already completed relevant courses before entering the master’s program, they may apply for an exemption. However, the exemption must meet the standards and approval of the department’s curriculum committee.
  VIII. Thesis Defense:
1.  Students should discuss with their advisors prior to the end of first academic year. 2.  Students must get the certification of “Education on Academic and Research Ethics” course before the application of the oral defense.
3.  Students who complete minimum of enrollment, fulfill graduation credits, and complete the draft of thesis should apply for oral defense at least 20 days prior to the oral defense. The passing grade for defense is 70.
4.  Adhere to the academic regulations for the master’s program in this department.		Oral defense comprises 50% of graduation grade. Students must learn “Education on Academic and Research Ethics” course and take the exam to obtain the certificate form the Center for Taiwan Academic Research Ethics Education website. Each department may additionally require the completion of professional academic research ethics education workshops, which will be implemented according to the regulations established by each department. Master thesis should be written in English and oral defense should be carried out in English. Students who fail oral defense within enrollment should retake it next semester or year. If students who retake oral defense fail again, their study will be terminated. The grade of those who pass retaking the oral defense is uniformly calculated at 70.

IX. Others:

  1. English proficiency certification must be obtained prior to applying for the thesis examination by meeting one of the following tests or conditions:

(1) A score of 523 or higher on the TOEFL Paper-Based Test (TOEFL ITP).
(2) A score of 193 or higher on the TOEFL Computer-Based Test (TOEFL CBT).
(3) A score of 69 or higher on the TOEFL Internet-Based Test (TOEFL IBT).
(4) A band score of 5.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
(5) A score of PET or higher on the Cambridge Certificate of English (issued by the University of Cambridge).
(6) A score of 670 or higher on the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC).
(7) A passing grade on the GEPT High-Intermediate Level Preliminary Test or higher.
(8) Completion of and passing a 3-credit course taught entirely in English (not counted toward graduation credits).

  1. Any matters not listed above or other special cases will be determined by resolution in the department’s relevant meetings.
According to Article 2 of the “National Chung Hsing University Student English Proficiency Graduation Standards Regulations,” departments and graduate institutes are authorized to establish their own English proficiency graduation standards for graduate students. (Established during the 57th Academic Affairs Meeting on March 26, 2009)
